WhiskerCover exists for one simple reason: most pet parents don't have the time (or patience) to read insurance policy PDFs for fun.
This page explains how we research pet insurance, how we decide what to recommend, and where money does-and doesn't-come into that process.
If you read our guides and think, "Okay, but how did they arrive at this?" - this is your answer.
1. What WhiskerCover Actually Does
WhiskerCover.com is run by WhiskerCover LLC, based in Florida, USA. We focus on:
- Explaining how pet insurance works in the U.S. for dogs and cats
- Comparing plan types and features, not just brand names
- Helping you understand trade-offs: cost vs. coverage, flexibility vs. simplicity
Right now, we:
- Do not sell or underwrite insurance policies
- Do not provide personalized financial, legal, or medical advice
- Do not give binding quotes or eligibility decisions
We're an education and comparison resource, not a vet clinic or an insurance company. For full legal details, see our Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Disclaimer & Affiliate Disclosure.
2. Where Our Information Comes From
When we write or update an article, we pull from several types of sources:
1. Insurer and broker websites
- Product pages and plan summaries
- Sample policy documents and terms & conditions
- FAQs and coverage examples
2. Public documents & industry materials
- Policy wordings, benefit tables, and exclusions
- Publicly available regulatory filings and brochures (where relevant)
3. Real-world user experiences (where available)
- Public reviews on third-party platforms
- Patterns and themes in common complaints or praise
- How insurers handle claims, communication, and billing issues
4. Our own test scenarios
- Example quotes using typical U.S. profiles (e.g., 2-year-old mixed-breed dog, 4-year-old indoor cat)
- Comparing prices and coverage for similar scenarios across multiple providers
We try to focus on how plans behave in real life, not just what the marketing page says.
Important: Pet insurance products change. Pricing, coverage, and eligibility can shift fast. We aim to keep our content current, but the insurer's own documents always win if there's a conflict.
3. How We Evaluate Pet Insurance Plans
When we talk about a plan being "good value" or a provider being "strong" in a category, we're usually thinking in terms of:
3.1 Coverage depth & flexibility
We look at:
- What's covered (accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, chronic issues)
- Annual limits, per-incident limits, and lifetime caps
- Reimbursement options and deductible choices
- Waiting periods and any particularly strict restrictions
Coverage usually matters more to us than fancy branding or a slightly slicker app.
3.2 Exclusions & fine print
We pay special attention to:
- Pre-existing condition rules and how they're defined
- Bilateral conditions and other "gotchas" in the wording
- Caps on common issues (e.g., certain surgeries, cancer care)
- Age limits for enrollment or renewal
If a plan looks amazing on the homepage but is full of landmines in the fine print, we'll say that.
3.3 Price & value
We don't pretend to know your quote-that's between you and the insurer. But we can look at:
- How a plan's pricing compares to similar coverage from other providers (using test profiles)
- Whether you're likely paying extra mainly for brand or marketing
- Whether "cheap" also means "thin coverage" in practice
When we write "cheap" or "budget-friendly," we mean lower average pricing for typical scenarios while still providing meaningful coverage-not just the lowest number at any cost.
3.4 Customer experience
We consider:
- Ease of sign-up and clarity of information
- Claim submission options (app, web, email)
- Transparency around reimbursements and timelines
- Reports of frustrating claim denials or surprise exclusions
We can't personally test every claim with every insurer, but we do look for patterns in real-world feedback.
4. How We Decide "Best" and "Top" Picks
You'll see phrases like "best cheap pet insurance", "top plans for seniors", or "best pet insurance by state" across the site.
Here's what that actually means:
"Best" = Best fit for common user scenarios, based on features, coverage, and value - not "perfect for everyone" or "objectively #1 for all pets."
Our picks are editorial judgments, built from:
- Coverage quality
- Flexibility of deductibles/limits
- Typical pricing and value
- Customer experience and transparency
We do not rank providers purely by who pays us more in affiliate commissions.
Why not build a single "master score"? Because your ideal plan depends heavily on:
- Pet's age, breed, and health history
- Where you live
- Your budget and risk tolerance
- Whether you care more about catastrophic coverage or broad everyday coverage
Instead of pretending there's one perfect answer, we try to be explicit about what trade-offs you're making.
5. How We Make Money (and Stay Honest)
WhiskerCover is reader-supported. We earn money in two main ways:
- Affiliate links / referral partnerships: When you click on some links to pet insurance companies and purchase a policy, we may earn a commission or referral fee. This does not increase what you pay and helps keep the site free to use.
- Occasional partnerships or sponsored placements (in the future): If we work with partners in a more formal way, those placements will be clearly labeled.
What we do not do:
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not share your email address with insurers for their own marketing via these links.
- We do not let partners buy positive reviews or control our editorial opinions.
Our long-term business only works if you trust that we're telling you the truth about both pros and cons. For more detail, see our Disclaimer & Affiliate Disclosure.
6. How Often We Update Content
We regularly revisit key guides and "best of" pages, especially when:
- A provider changes its pricing or coverage
- New products or players enter the market
- We see repeated user questions or pain points that aren't well addressed
However:
- We can't guarantee that every page is updated in real time.
- There may be a delay between an insurer changing their product and us reflecting that change.
If you spot something that looks outdated or wrong, we genuinely appreciate a heads-up at support@whiskercover.com.
7. Limitations You Should Know About
A quick reality check:
- We don't cover every insurer or every plan in the U.S.
- We can't see your individual medical records, quote history, or claim history.
- We can't predict exactly how an insurer will handle your specific claim.
Everything on WhiskerCover should be treated as general guidance and education, not a promise or guarantee of any specific outcome.
When you're close to buying:
- Get a fresh quote directly from the insurer.
- Read the actual policy documents, especially exclusions and limits.
- Ask questions if anything is unclear.
- Talk to your vet and/or a licensed insurance professional if you're unsure.
8. How to Give Feedback or Ask Questions
We want this site to be genuinely useful, not just another generic "top 10" list.
If you think we mis-described a product, have a positive or negative experience with a provider, or want to suggest a topic, you can reach us at:

Bottom line: Our methodology is simple-read the fine print, test what we can, listen to real users, and be honest about trade-offs and incentives. We're not here to tell you there's one "perfect" plan… we're here to help you feel like you actually understand the options before you hit "buy."
