2. Information We Collect

What we collect depends on what you do on the Site. Reading our articles involves very little personal information. Getting quotes involves details about your pet. Applying for a policy involves the details an insurer needs to issue and bill it.

2.1. Information You Provide When You Contact Us or Subscribe

• Email address – for example, when you subscribe to a newsletter or contact us.
• Name, subject, and message content – what you enter in our contact form, and any information you include in an email you send to us.

2.2. Information You Provide to Get Quotes

• Pet details – species, sex, age, breed (and whether purebred or mixed), adult weight, whether your pet has any pre-existing conditions (a yes-or-no answer), and your pet's name if you choose to give it.
• ZIP code – because pet insurance prices and plan availability depend on where you live.
• Coverage choices – such as the deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, and add-ons you select.
• Email address (optional) – if you give it, we carry it into your application so you don't have to type it again, and we use it to reply if you contact us about your quote.

2.3. Information You Provide to Apply for a Policy

• Contact details – first and last name, email address, and phone number. The insurer requires these to issue and service your policy; we pass them to the insurer you choose, which may use them to contact you about your application and policy.
• Addresses – your residential or mailing address and, if different, your billing address.
• Payment details – the name on the card, card number, expiry date, security code, and the payment schedule you choose. Your card details travel over an encrypted connection to our servers, which forward them to the payment gateway or insurer that processes your payment. We use them only for that purpose and we do not store your card number or security code – not in our database and not in receipts, summaries, or emails.
• Application details – the plan and coverage you selected, the confirmations and consents you give, and the date and time you gave them.

We do not ask for your Social Security number, driver's license number, or your pet's full veterinary records. If an insurer needs medical records, it will ask you or your veterinarian for them directly.

2.4. Information We Receive From Insurers

When you request quotes or apply, insurers and their administrators send us the quotes and plan details prepared for your pet and, after you apply, information about the status of your application and policy (for example, whether it was issued, its policy number and effective date, its premium, and whether it renews or cancels). We use this to show your results, to confirm your enrollment, to service your policy as the agency of record, and to reconcile the commissions insurers pay us.

2.5. Information Collected Automatically

When you use the Site, certain information is collected automatically through our hosting environment (Microsoft Azure) and, unless you turn them off, through Google Analytics and Google Ads (loaded through Google Tag Manager), which use cookies and similar technologies. If your device is set to a European time zone, Google Analytics and Google Ads are not used until you agree (see Section 4.1). The information includes:

• IP address
• Browser type and version
• Device type and operating system
• Pages viewed, time spent on pages, and general interactions such as clicks on links and buttons
• Referring URLs and general usage patterns
• The identifiers stored in analytics and advertising cookies, and whether you reached the Site by clicking one of our Google ads

We use this information mostly in aggregated form to understand how visitors use the Site and, as described below, to measure and show our Google ads. We do not send your name, contact details, address, pet details, or payment details to Google Analytics or Google Ads, and we do not put personal information in page addresses (URLs). Our analytics events record only what happened (for example, that a form was started or a link was clicked), never what was typed. In Google Analytics we have email redaction switched on, and the Google signals and user-provided data collection settings switched off.

We also advertise on Google. Our Google Analytics property is linked to our Google Ads account with ads personalization switched on. That lets us measure which of our ads bring visitors to the Site, and lets Google show our ads to people who have visited the Site when they later use Google and its partner sites. This is called remarketing. In the Quote Tool, advertising personalization is always switched off, so what you do there is never used for ad targeting or remarketing. Nothing you type anywhere on the Site, including in the Quote Tool, is sent to Google Analytics or Google Ads.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

• To obtain and display quotes for your pet from participating insurers and to let you compare plans
• To submit your application and payment details to the insurer you choose, and to confirm the result to you
• To send you the quotes, confirmations, and service messages you request or that relate to a policy you bought through us
• To service policies placed through us and to account for the commissions insurers pay us
• To operate, maintain, and improve the Site
• To respond to your inquiries, emails, or requests
• To send you communications you have requested (for example, newsletters)
• To analyze usage and performance of the Site using Google Analytics
• To advertise on Google: to measure which of our ads bring visitors and to show our ads to people who have visited the Site (remarketing), unless you turn advertising cookies off
• To prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents
• To comply with applicable laws and regulations, including the record-keeping rules that apply to licensed insurance agencies

We do not use the information you enter in the Quote Tool to build advertising profiles, and we do not use it to send you marketing unless you asked for it. Advertising personalization is always switched off in the Quote Tool, so your activity there is never used for ad targeting or remarketing.

Legal Bases (for clarity)

While WhiskerCover is aimed at users in the United States, our main legal bases for processing personal information (where applicable) are:

• Your request – we process quote and application information to carry out the transaction you asked for.
• Your consent – for example, when you subscribe to email updates. If your device is set to a European time zone, we ask first, and our analytics and advertising cookies rest on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Your Privacy Choices.
• Our legitimate interests – such as improving the Site, understanding usage, and maintaining security.
• Legal obligations – such as insurance record-keeping and responding to regulators.

WhiskerCover LLC is the controller of the personal information collected through this Site. Once your information reaches an insurer, that insurer is independently responsible for how it handles it.

4. Cookies & Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies, such as your browser's local storage, for three purposes. Our Cookie Policy lists each one by name, with who sets it and how long it lasts.

• Strictly necessary: our own cookie, wc_consent, remembers the privacy choices you make on the Site. It is the only cookie our own code sets, and we set it only when you make a choice.
• Analytics: Google Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors find and use the Site, so we can measure and improve our pages.
• Advertising: Google Ads cookies measure which of our ads bring visitors to the Site and let Google show our ads to people who have visited the Site, on Google and its partner sites (remarketing). When advertising is on, Google can also use the visit data that Google Analytics collects to build these remarketing lists.

The analytics and advertising cookies are set by Google's tags, which we load on the Site through Google Tag Manager.

The Quote Tool keeps the details you enter in your browser's memory only while the page is open. It does not save them in cookies or in your browser's storage, which is why refreshing the page clears your answers. Advertising personalization is always switched off in the Quote Tool, so what you do there is never used for ad targeting or remarketing.

4.1 Your Privacy Choices

You can turn analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or both on or off at any time in Your Privacy Choices. Open it from the "Your Privacy Choices" link at the bottom of every page, or with this button:

• If your device is set to a European time zone, we ask first. No analytics or advertising cookies are used, and Google Analytics and Google Ads don't load at all, until you agree. We treat a device set to UTC, or one that doesn't report a time zone, the same way.
• Everywhere else, including the United States, analytics and advertising cookies are on by default, and you can turn either or both off at any time.
• Advertising needs Analytics. Our Google Ads measurement runs through Google Analytics, so turning Analytics off turns Advertising off too.
• Turning Advertising off is your request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted (cross-context behavioral) advertising in this browser (see Section 10.5). We use sensitive personal information, such as your card details, only to provide the service you asked for, like paying the insurer you chose, so there is nothing to limit.
• Your choice is saved in your browser. We keep it in the wc_consent cookie, and it covers the whole Site, including the Quote Tool. If you turn anything off, we renew the cookie each time you visit, so your opt-out lasts until you change it or clear your cookies. Safari and other browsers on iPhone and iPad may still delete it after 7 days without a visit; Global Privacy Control (Section 4.2) keeps advertising off there without it. If you accept everything from a European time zone, we ask again after 12 months. Your choice applies only to the browser you made it in, so if you use another browser or device, or clear your cookies, you'll need to choose again.
• Turning something off takes effect right away. We delete the matching Google cookies from the Site and tell Google's tags to stop using them.
• Without JavaScript, the button above won't work, but you won't need it: if JavaScript is turned off in your browser, no analytics or advertising tags load at all.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. Our Cookie Policy lists more ways to control them, including Google's own opt-out tools.

4.2 Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising in that browser. Advertising cookies stay off, even if you turned them on earlier, and Your Privacy Choices shows "Opt-Out Request Honored". GPC doesn't turn off Google Analytics; you can do that separately in Your Privacy Choices.

The Site does not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals, because there is still no common standard for how to interpret them. We do honor Global Privacy Control, as described above.

4.3 Google and Other Websites

When our analytics or advertising cookies are on, Google may collect information about your online activities over time and across different websites when you use our Site, and it uses that information under its own policies, for example to show you our ads on other sites. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services, and you can manage the ads Google shows you in My Ad Center. We don't currently use advertising or social media tracking tools from any company other than Google on the Site.

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We do use Google advertising cookies, including for remarketing, unless you turn them off; under some state privacy laws that may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" (see "Google, for Advertising" below and Section 10.5).

We do not disclose your email address, or anything else you type on the Site, to third parties for their own marketing purposes.

We disclose information only in the following situations:

Insurers, to Get Your Quotes:

To produce real quotes, we send the insurers that participate in the Quote Tool (and the administrators or managing general agents that run their quoting systems) your pet's details, ZIP code, and coverage choices. Where an insurer's quoting system requires a contact detail to return a quote, we provide only what that system requires. We send this information for one purpose only: so that the insurer can quote you.

The Insurer You Choose, to Apply:

When you apply, we send your application – your contact details, addresses, pet details, selected coverage, and payment details – to the insurer you selected, its administrator, and the payment gateway or processor that handles its payments, so that the policy can be underwritten, issued, billed, and serviced. We do not send your application to insurers you did not select. The insurer's handling of your information is governed by its own privacy policy, which you will receive with your policy documents.

Service Providers:

• Microsoft Azure (hosting and infrastructure)
• Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager (web analytics) and Google Ads (ad measurement; for remarketing, see "Google, for Advertising" below)
• Formspree (processes our newsletter sign-up and contact forms) and Google Workspace (our email)
• Any email service provider we use to deliver email communications
• The payment gateway we use to transmit your payment details securely to the insurer or to process the payment on its behalf

These providers handle information for us under their own terms and data-processing agreements, and we give them only what they need to provide their service.

Google, for Advertising:

Unless you turn advertising cookies off, Google also receives cookie identifiers, your IP address, and information about the pages you visit on the Site, which it uses under its own policies to measure our ads and to show our ads to people who have visited the Site (remarketing). This may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under state privacy laws; Section 10.5 explains how to opt out. If advertising cookies are off but analytics cookies are on, Google's tag still sends Google a cookieless notice of each page view, marked as not for personalized advertising. Google's analytics and advertising services never receive anything you type on the Site, and advertising personalization is always switched off in the Quote Tool.

Affiliate Links:

When you click an affiliate link in an article, we do not send your personal information to that company. The link tells the company that you arrived from WhiskerCover so it can credit us. Anything you then enter on its website is governed by its privacy policy.

Legal Requirements and Protection:

We may disclose information if required to do so by law, or if we reasonably believe such action is necessary to comply with legal obligations (including requests from state insurance regulators), to detect or prevent fraud, to protect our rights, or to protect the safety of others.

Business Transfers:

If WhiskerCover is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or part of its business, customer information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy and applicable insurance privacy laws.

6. Insurance Privacy Notice (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and State Insurance Privacy Laws)

This section applies to the nonpublic personal information we obtain when you request quotes or apply for insurance through WhiskerCover.

• What we collect: information we receive from you on quote requests and applications (such as your name, address, contact details, pet details, and payment details) and information about your transactions with us and with the insurers you apply to (such as the plan you bought, its premium, and its status).
• What we disclose, and to whom: we disclose this information to the insurers, administrators, and payment gateways or processors involved in the quote or policy you requested, to service providers that work for us, and as permitted or required by law (for example, to regulators or to prevent fraud). These disclosures are the ones the law permits without an opt-out because they are necessary to carry out the transaction you asked for.
• What we do not do: we do not disclose nonpublic personal information to nonaffiliated third parties for their own marketing, and we have no affiliates with which we share it. Because we make no such disclosures, there is nothing for you to opt out of. If that ever changes, we will tell you first and give you the chance to opt out. Our Google advertising cookies (Section 4) do not change this: advertising personalization is always switched off in the Quote Tool, and nothing you enter in a quote or application is sent to Google Analytics or Google Ads.
• Former customers: we treat information about former customers the same way we treat information about current customers.
• How we protect it: we restrict access to people and service providers who need the information to serve you, and we maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards, as described in Section 8.
• Your access and correction rights: you may ask us what information we hold about you and ask us to correct it, as described in Section 9.
• Residents of California, Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia: your state's insurance information privacy law gives you specific rights. Send a written request to privacy@whiskercover.com or to our mailing address. Within 30 business days we will tell you what recorded personal information we hold about you, let you see and copy it, and tell you who we have disclosed it to in the past two years. If you ask us to correct, amend, or delete it, within 30 business days we will either do so or tell you why not and how to file a short statement of disagreement, which we will keep with your record. A fuller description of our information practices is available on request.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law.

• Email addresses and related communications: We generally retain email addresses and related message content for up to 12 months from your last interaction with us or until you request deletion, whichever comes first.
• Quotes you did not act on: The details you enter stay in your browser while the page is open. Where we keep a record of a quote (for example, because you asked us to email it to you), we keep it for up to 12 months.
• Applications and policies: State insurance laws require licensed agencies to keep records of insurance transactions for several years. We keep application and policy records for as long as the policy is in force and afterwards for the period those laws require, even if you ask us to delete them sooner.
• Payment details: Card numbers and security codes pass through our servers only long enough to be forwarded to the payment gateway or insurer. We do not store them.
• Analytics and logs: Usage data collected via Google Analytics is retained for 14 months, the retention period we have configured. Aggregate, non-identifiable data may be retained for longer for reporting and site improvement.
• Advertising: Google Ads click cookies, such as _gcl_aw, last 90 days. If advertising cookies are on, Google can keep your browser on our advertising audience (remarketing) lists for up to 540 days, the maximum Google allows.
• Your privacy choices: The wc_consent cookie that remembers them lasts 12 months. If you turned anything off, we renew it each time you visit, so it lasts until you change your choice or clear your cookies (Safari and other browsers on iPhone and iPad may delete it after 7 days without a visit). If you accepted everything, it lasts 12 months from your choice. When it expires, visitors whose device is set to a European time zone are asked again, and for everyone else the default settings described in Section 4.1 apply again.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to help protect the information we collect. These include encrypting information in transit, using trusted providers such as Microsoft Azure for hosting, limiting access to customer information, protecting our accounts with multi-factor authentication, and maintaining a written information security program as required of licensed insurance agencies.

However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security. If a security incident affects your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant regulators as the law requires.

9. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information. Even if not required, we aim to be reasonable and responsive to privacy-related requests.

You can:

• Access or update the personal information you have provided to us
• Request correction of information in a quote or application record that you believe is wrong
• Request deletion of the personal information we hold about you, subject to legal obligations such as insurance record-keeping
• Withdraw consent to email communications by using any unsubscribe link provided or contacting us at privacy@whiskercover.com
• Turn off analytics and advertising cookies at any time in Your Privacy Choices, or opt out of targeted advertising with Global Privacy Control (Section 4.2)

We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests. For information held by an insurer about your policy or claims, contact that insurer directly; we can help you find the right contact.

10. Additional Information for California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, may provide you with specific rights regarding your personal information. Some information we collect to quote or place insurance is governed instead by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and California's insurance privacy laws and is exempt from the CCPA; Section 6 describes how we handle it. In California, WhiskerCover LLC does business as WhiskerCoverage Insurance Agency (License # 6020319).

10.1 Notice at Collection: Summary

For each category of personal information we collect, this summary shows why we collect it, whether it is sold or shared, and how long we keep it. The rest of this Policy has the details.

• Identifiers you give us (name, email address, phone number, postal address): to get your quotes, submit your application, service your policy, and reply to you. Sold or shared: no. Kept as described in Section 7: email addresses and related messages for up to 12 months after your last interaction, and application and policy records for as long as insurance laws require.
• Online identifiers and internet activity (cookie IDs, your IP address and the general location it implies, the pages you view and how you use them, and whether one of our ads brought you here): for analytics, security, measuring our ads, and remarketing. Sold for money: no. Shared: yes, with Google for cross-context behavioral advertising, unless you opt out (Section 10.5). Google Analytics data is kept for 14 months, Google Ads click cookies last 90 days, and Google's advertising audience lists keep a browser for up to 540 days.
• Customer records and sensitive personal information (billing address, payment card number and security code): only to pay the insurer you chose. Sold or shared: no. We do not store card numbers or security codes; your billing address is kept with your application record.
• Commercial information (the quotes you requested and the plans you applied for or bought): to show quotes, submit applications, service policies, and account for commissions. Sold or shared: no. Quote records we keep are kept for up to 12 months, and application and policy records for as long as insurance laws require.
• Approximate location (your ZIP code): to price plans and check where they are available. Sold or shared: no. Kept only with a quote record or application, as above.

10.2 Categories of Personal Information We Collect

In the past 12 months, we have collected, or our Quote Tool is designed to collect, the following categories of personal information (as defined by CCPA):

• Identifiers: Name, email address, phone number, postal address, IP address, and the identifiers stored in cookies.
• Customer records: Billing address and payment card details you enter to pay an insurer.
• Commercial information: The quotes you requested and the plans you applied for or purchased.
• Internet or other electronic network activity information: Browsing history and interactions with our Site, and whether one of our Google ads brought you to it (through Google Analytics and Google Ads cookies).
• Approximate location: Your ZIP code and the general location implied by your IP address. We do not collect precise geolocation.
• Sensitive personal information: A payment card number together with its security code, which we use only to forward your payment to the payment gateway or insurer you chose and do not store. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you.

Information about your pet is not, by itself, personal information about you, but we treat it with the same care because it is linked to your quote or application.

10.3 Sources of Personal Information

We collect these categories of information:

• Directly from you (when you provide your email, send us a message, request quotes, or apply for a policy)
• Automatically from your use of the Site (via analytics and advertising cookies and server logs)
• From insurers and their administrators (quotes and the status of applications and policies placed through us)

10.4 Business or Commercial Purposes and Recipients

We use and disclose these categories of personal information for the purposes described in Sections 3–5 of this Policy, including: obtaining quotes, submitting applications, servicing policies, operating and improving the Site, communicating with you, analytics and security, advertising our services, and compliance with law. We disclose identifiers, customer records, commercial information, and approximate location to the insurers you request quotes from or apply to and to our service providers; we disclose online identifiers (cookie IDs and IP address) and internet activity information to Google for analytics, ad measurement, and advertising.

10.5 Sale and Sharing of Personal Information

• We do not sell your personal information for money. The commission an insurer pays us is payment for placing a policy you chose to buy, not payment for your information, and we send your application only to the insurer you selected, at your direction.
• We use Google advertising cookies, including for remarketing (see Section 4). Under the CCPA, this may count as "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and under some other state privacy laws it may count as "targeted advertising" and possibly a "sale". The personal information involved is identifiers (cookie IDs and IP address) and internet activity on our Site, and the third party that receives it is Google.
• This never includes anything you type on the Site, and advertising personalization is always switched off in the Quote Tool.
• We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.

How to opt out: turn off Advertising in Your Privacy Choices (the link at the bottom of every page), or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser, which we treat as a request to opt out of sale, sharing, and targeted advertising. You don't need to give us any information to opt out. Your choice works per browser: it applies only to the browser you make it in, and we renew it each time you visit, but clearing your cookies resets it, and Safari and other browsers on iPhone and iPad may delete it after 7 days without a visit. Global Privacy Control has neither limit, because your browser sends that signal with every visit.

10.6 Your California Privacy Rights

Subject to certain exceptions, California residents may have the right to request to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, request deletion of your personal information, request correction of inaccurate personal information, limit the use of sensitive personal information to what is needed to provide the service you asked for (which is already the only way we use it), and not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights. You also have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, as described in Section 10.5.

To exercise these rights, you can contact us at privacy@whiskercover.com and indicate that you are a California resident making a CCPA/CPRA request. We may ask for information to verify your identity.

11. Children

The Site and the Quote Tool are for adults. You must be at least 18 to request quotes or apply for insurance, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

12. International Visitors

This Site is intended for users located in the United States, and insurance is offered through it only to residents of the U.S. states where we are licensed. If your device is set to a European time zone, we ask before using any analytics or advertising cookies (see Section 4.1).

If you access the Site from outside the United States, your information is transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States (and possibly other countries where our service providers operate), which may have different data protection laws than your country of residence.

13. Third-Party Websites

Our Site may contain links to third-party websites (including pet insurance companies and other partners), and for some insurers the Quote Tool may direct you to the insurer's own website to finish an application.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third-party sites. Any information you provide on those sites is governed by their respective privacy policies, not this one.

14. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice (for example, by posting a banner on the Site).
