Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help websites remember your actions and preferences over time.

Some tools use similar technologies instead of, or as well as, cookies, such as your browser's local storage. This Policy covers those too and calls them all "cookies" for short.

The only cookie our own code sets is wc_consent, which remembers your privacy choices. The analytics and advertising cookies described below are set by Google's tags, which we load on the Site through Google Tag Manager.

2. How Your Choices Work

We use three kinds of cookies: strictly necessary (only our wc_consent cookie), analytics (Google Analytics, which shows us how the Site is used), and advertising (Google Ads, which measures which of our ads bring visitors and lets Google show our ads to people who have visited the Site, on Google and its partner sites; this is called remarketing). What happens when you arrive depends on the time zone your device is set to:

• If your device is set to a European time zone, we ask first. Until you agree, Google Analytics and Google Ads don't load at all, and no analytics or advertising cookies are set. You can accept all, reject all, or choose category by category. We treat a device set to UTC, or one that doesn't report a time zone, the same way.
• Everywhere else, including the United States, analytics and advertising cookies are on by default. You can turn either or both off at any time in Your Privacy Choices.
• If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising. Advertising cookies stay off, and Your Privacy Choices shows "Opt-Out Request Honored". GPC doesn't turn off analytics cookies; you can do that separately.
• Do Not Track: the Site does not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals, because there is still no common standard for how to interpret them. We do honor GPC, as described above.

Advertising needs analytics: our Google Ads measurement runs through Google Analytics, so turning analytics off turns advertising off too. With advertising off and analytics on, Google's tag still sends Google a cookieless notice of each page view, marked as not for personalized advertising.

Your choice is saved in the wc_consent cookie in the browser you made it in, and it covers the whole Site, including our quote and comparison tool. If you turn anything off, we renew the cookie each time you visit, so your opt-out lasts until you change it or clear your cookies. Safari and other browsers on iPhone and iPad may still delete it after 7 days without a visit; Global Privacy Control keeps advertising off there without it. If you accept everything from a European time zone, we ask again after 12 months. Your choice doesn't carry over to other browsers or devices. When you turn analytics or advertising off, we delete the matching Google cookies from the Site and tell Google's tags to stop using them. If JavaScript is turned off in your browser, no analytics or advertising tags load at all.

3. The Cookies We Use

The Google cookies in this table are set on our domain by Google's tags. When advertising is on, Google can also use the visit data that Google Analytics collects to add your browser to our remarketing lists; when advertising is off, the Site tells Google not to. Google may also use its own cookies on its own domains, such as google.com and doubleclick.net, to show ads, under Google's own policies. Google lists them on its advertising cookies page.

Our quote and comparison tool. The details you enter to get quotes or apply for a policy (about your pet, yourself, and your payment method) are kept in your browser's memory only while the page is open. We do not store them in cookies or in your browser's local storage, which is why refreshing the page clears them. The same Google Analytics cookies described above measure how the tool is used, without receiving the details you type into it. Advertising cookies can show whether a visit to the tool started with one of our ads, but advertising personalization is always switched off in the tool, so what you do there is never used for ad targeting or remarketing.

We do not:

• Sell your personal information for money
• Put anything you type on the Site into cookies, or send it to Google Analytics or Google Ads
• Use your activity in our quote and comparison tool for ad targeting or remarketing
• Use tracking tools from other advertising networks or social media companies

4. Not Cookies, but Good to Know

• Google Fonts. Our pages load their fonts from Google Fonts. To send them, Google receives your IP address and the standard information your browser sends with any request, whatever your cookie choices. Google Fonts doesn't set cookies.
• Formspree. Our newsletter sign-up and contact forms are processed by Formspree, which receives your details only when you submit a form.
• Affiliate partners. If you click an affiliate link in one of our articles, the insurer's or affiliate network's website may set its own cookie so that it can credit WhiskerCover if you buy. Those cookies are set on their sites, under their policies, not ours, and your choices on our Site don't control them.

5. How to Change Your Choices

You can change your choices at any time:

• Your Privacy Choices: the link at the bottom of every page, or the button below, lets you turn analytics and advertising cookies on or off in the browser you're using.
• Global Privacy Control: turn on GPC in your browser or a browser extension, and we'll keep advertising cookies off in that browser. Learn more at globalprivacycontrol.org.
• Your browser settings: most browsers let you block cookies, delete them, or warn you before they are stored. Deleting cookies also deletes your saved choices: if your device is set to a European time zone, we'll ask again; otherwise analytics and advertising cookies are back on until you turn them off (advertising stays off while GPC is on).
• Google's tools: manage or turn off personalized ads from Google in My Ad Center, and stop Google Analytics from collecting your visits on any website with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Open Your Privacy Choices

If you block cookies, you should still be able to read our content, but the Site can't remember your privacy choices. If JavaScript is turned off in your browser, the button above won't work, but you won't need it: no analytics or advertising tags load at all.

6. Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time (for example, if we add or remove tools that use cookies). When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
