How WhiskerCover Makes Money

The short version

WhiskerCover is free to use. We never charge you a fee - not for reading, not for quotes, not for applying.
WhiskerCover LLC is a licensed insurance agency. When you buy a pet insurance policy through our quote and comparison tool, the insurer pays us a commission.
Some links in our articles are affiliate links. If you click one and buy from that company, it may pay us a referral fee.
We never add a fee or markup. Insurers set their prices using rates they file with state insurance regulators; we can't change them.
That compensation does not decide our rankings, ratings, or recommendations (see our editorial policy).
We do not sell your personal information for money. Our privacy policy explains the Google advertising cookies we use and how to turn them off.

1. Commissions on policies bought through WhiskerCover

Our quote and comparison tool lets you enter your pet's details, see quotes from participating insurers, compare plan benefits side by side, and apply for the plan you choose. When you do that, here is how the money works:

The insurer pays us, not you. If your application is accepted and the policy is issued, the insurance company pays WhiskerCover a commission for placing it. Commissions are typically a percentage of the premium, and we may keep earning one for as long as the policy stays in force, including when it renews.
You pay the insurer's price and nothing more. We don't charge application, service, or any other fees. Your premium is set by the insurer from the rates it has filed with your state's insurance regulator.
Commission rates differ between insurers and plans. The amount we earn can vary with the insurer and plan you pick and, in some cases, with the volume or profitability of the business we place with an insurer. That's exactly why the guardrails further down this page exist.
You can ask what we earn. Email support@whiskercover.com and we'll tell you the compensation we expect to receive on the policy you're considering, and on the other plans we quoted you.

In this role we act as a licensed insurance agency (an insurance producer) working with the insurers whose plans we quote. We are not the insurance company: the insurer decides whether to accept your application, issues the policy, collects your premium, and pays your claims.

2. Affiliate links in our articles

Some links in our guides and reviews are affiliate links. When you click one and then get a quote or buy a policy on that company's own website, the company may pay us a commission or referral fee.

We don't add a fee or markup when you use an affiliate link. The company pays us, and you pay the company's own price.
Affiliate links are marked as such in the page's code (with a rel="sponsored" attribute), and every article that carries them has a disclosure note at the top.

Which insurers you'll see in our quote tool

Our quote tool shows plans from insurers we have an agreement with, in the states where we are licensed. That is not every pet insurer in the country, so the quotes you see are not the whole market.

Our articles are broader than our quote tool on purpose. We review and compare companies whether or not we can sell their plans or earn anything from them, and we say so when a company we don't work with is the better fit.

How we keep money separate from our recommendations

This is the part that matters most. Compensation can never buy a better outcome on WhiskerCover:

A commission cannot buy a higher ranking, a better rating, or favorable coverage - in our articles or in our quote results.
What an insurer pays us plays no part in which plan we feature or in the order of your quote results. You can re-sort the results yourself by price, protection, or value at any time.
We publish the drawbacks - exclusions, waiting periods, renewal price hikes, weak claim experiences - even for companies we earn money from.
When a cheaper plan, a different company, or no insurance at all is the better call for a reader, we say so.

What happens to the details you give us

To get you real quotes we have to send your pet's details and ZIP code to the insurers that quote you, and if you apply, we send your application to the insurer you chose. That is the only reason insurers receive it. We don't sell or rent the details you give us, and we don't hand your contact details to insurers you didn't pick so they can market to you. Our privacy policy has the full detail.

What we never do

We never charge you a fee or add a markup to an insurer's price.
We never sell your personal information for money or rent it out.
We never let an insurer or advertiser review, approve, or edit our content before it's published.
We never hide that a link is an affiliate link, or that we earn a commission on a policy sold through us.

Why we disclose all of this

Honest disclosure is required of us twice over - by the FTC as a publisher and by state insurance regulators as a licensed agency - and it is the foundation of trust in everything we publish.
