Yes — Kanguro is a real, licensed pet insurance operation. But the brand on the advertising is not the company on the hook: Kanguro Insurance LLC is a Miami-based managing general agent that markets and administers the product, while the policy is underwritten by Cimarron Insurance Company — the insurer that owes you covered claims.
That matters more here than at most carriers, because Kanguro publishes two different sample policy forms side by side — and they disagree about the one number a new buyer most needs. On accidents, one form says you wait 14 days; the other says two. Nothing on the site tells you which applies in your state.
So we read both forms in full, checked Kanguro's own quote engine state by state, and traced who ultimately carries the risk. No other page ranking for this brand does — the two biggest reviews don't even name the underwriter.
Legitimate is not the same as recommended, and this review keeps those separate. Kanguro can be a reasonable choice for a Spanish-preferring household — and a poor fit if you need certainty that your vet gets paid directly.
What follows is an honest, licensed-agent read: who stands behind Kanguro, what it really costs, where the fine print bites, whether the Spanish-language service is as complete as it sounds, and what to confirm before you pay.

Who Kanguro Is — and Who Actually Carries the Risk
Three companies stand behind a Kanguro policy, and only one of them has "Kanguro" on the door.
Kanguro Insurance LLC is a Miami-based managing general agent — an agency licensed to sell and administer policies on an insurer's behalf while carrying none of the risk itself. Kanguro's own claims page states this plainly, naming Cimarron Insurance Company (NAIC 20400) as the underwriter — the company that legally owes you the claim.
Cimarron then passes that risk along. Its 2025 statements filed with the Bermuda Monetary Authority show a Bermuda reinsurer, Golden Tree Reinsurance Limited, assuming 100% of the pet risk Cimarron issues — an arrangement running since May 2022. A reinsurer is an insurer's own insurer; when it takes the whole book, the named carrier is a fronting carrier, issuing the paper while someone else holds the exposure.

One detail in those filings appears nowhere on Kanguro's website: the same document lists Kanguro Insurance LLC as an entity under common control of Golden Tree's parent. The agency selling the policy and the reinsurer funding your claim sit inside one group.
None of that is improper — fronting is ordinary insurtech plumbing, disclosed to Bermuda's regulator. But there is an irony worth knowing: the reinsurer holds an A.M. Best rating of B++ (Good), with its issuer credit rating outlook revised to positive in October 2025. The carrier named on your policy has no A.M. Best rating at all.
Is Kanguro's Underwriter Financially Sound?
Reasonably — but two rating agencies disagree about how reasonably, and you should see both.
Cimarron holds a Financial Stability Rating of A ("Exceptional") from Demotech, affirmed 19 June 2026. It carries no rating from A.M. Best, the agency most people recognize, or from KBRA.
That distinction gets mangled constantly. Several pages reviewing Kanguro say its underwriter is "not rated by AM Best or Demotech" — a claim traceable to a much-read forum post. It is half wrong. Cimarron is Demotech-rated; A.M. Best has simply issued no opinion, which is not the same as failing one. Ratings are voluntary and expensive; smaller specialty carriers routinely skip them.
The counterweight comes from Weiss Ratings, which grades Cimarron a C and flags a history of deficient reserves. Weiss takes no payment from the companies it rates and is stricter by design — but the disagreement is genuine, and pretending otherwise would not help you.
There is a backstop, worth understanding correctly. Because Cimarron is admitted, a liquidation puts your claims — not your policy — in front of your state's guaranty association. The policy is cancelled, usually within 30 days, and you buy replacement coverage yourself. Payouts run to the lesser of your policy limit or a state cap, most commonly $300,000, and Florida's fund does count pet insurance among the lines it pays. (Our methodology explains how we weigh signals like these.)
What Kanguro Pet Insurance Costs
Less than you might fear — but more than the headline suggests, and Kanguro currently advertises two different starting prices at the same time.
Its main pet page says dogs from $55 a month and cats from $35. Two of its own carrier-comparison pages say $30 and $15. Both were live when we checked in July 2026, and archived captures show the higher pair unchanged since early 2025 — so this is not a price cut, it is two claims running in parallel. Neither discloses the pet, the state or the settings behind it, which is exactly what a "from" price hides.
Real quotes are more useful. These were sampled in Katy, Texas with a $200 deductible, a $5,000 annual limit and 80% reimbursement:
| Pet | At age 2 | At age 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Medium mixed-breed dog | $36/mo | $70/mo |
| French Bulldog | $91/mo | $177/mo |
| Domestic shorthair cat | $20/mo | $35/mo |

Notice what age does. Quoted on the same day, the eight-year-old profiles come in at roughly double the two-year-olds — and the Frenchie does it from a far higher base. These are separate quotes for hypothetical pets, not a forecast of your own renewals, which also move with vet costs and filed rates. Still, that slope, not the intro price, is what to budget around.
So is Kanguro cheap? Not especially. In one shopper's 18-carrier price comparison for a 5½-year-old chihuahua mix at unlimited coverage and 90% reimbursement, Kanguro came in at $71.05 a month — twelfth of eighteen, above Pets Best, Embrace and Figo.
One real advantage sits in the math: Kanguro subtracts your deductible before applying the reimbursement percentage — an order NerdWallet's worked example calls more generous than some other pet insurers, because it pays you more than doing it the other way round.
Plans and Coverage Options
Kanguro sells three named plans, and what separates them is routine care rather than accident-and-illness coverage:
- Essential Care — accidents and illnesses only.
- Premiere Care+ — the same, plus preventive and wellness reimbursement.
- Early Years Care+ — for pets under three, with the preventive portion active immediately and spay/neuter and microchipping included.
All three include free 24/7 TeleVet access. You then pick a reimbursement rate of 70%, 80% or 90%, a deductible starting at $200, and an annual limit from $5,000 upward.
Two cautions, because that menu is less fixed than it looks.
The unlimited annual limit is genuine — it turns up in a real shopper's quote and in the code behind Kanguro's own quote tool. But the options are served by ZIP code, and NerdWallet puts it the same way: unlimited "may be available" depending on where you live. An unlimited tier in Florida is no promise of one in Texas.
And the $100 deductible that several review sites still list appears to have been retired — Kanguro's current copy starts at $200. Check both on your own quote rather than assuming either.
The Two Policy Forms — and Why Your Waiting Period Depends on Which One You Get
Kanguro publishes two sample policies side by side, with nothing on the page saying which one applies where. They do not agree with each other.
Form POLJACKET (12/22) reads: "14 days for Accidents, 14 days for Illnesses and 6 months for Cruciate Ligament and other knee Injuries or Illnesses." Form PETPOL TRAD-ENG/ESP (02/25) reads: "two (2) days for Accidents, fourteen (14) days for Illnesses and six (6) months for Cruciate Ligament…"
| Waiting period | Form POLJACKET (12/22) | Form PETPOL (02/25) |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents | 14 days | 2 days |
| Illnesses | 14 days | 14 days |
| Knee & cruciate conditions | 6 months | 6 months |

That six-month knee wait drops to 14 days in either form if you hand over your pet's complete medical history showing no prior knee trouble.
Kanguro's own pages split along the same fault line: its terms and claims page both say 14 days for accidents, while its pet page says two.
The newer form changes more than the wait. Behavioral treatment, holistic therapies and prescription food shift from excluded to narrowly covered. The chronic and hereditary condition lists tighten from illustrative ("such as…") to closed ("limited to…"). And a usual-and-customary clause appears, letting the insurer reimburse only what it considers typical for your area — language found in no marketing copy.
So which one governs? The policy actually issued to you — a document you cannot read until after you have bought it.
One more question worth putting to an agent before you pay. The Ohio statute, Florida's Pet Insurance Act and the NAIC model law they follow all prohibit accident waiting periods outright, and cap waits for illnesses and for orthopedic conditions not resulting from an accident at 30 days. Both published Kanguro forms impose an accident wait anyway — and a six-month knee wait, well past that 30-day ceiling. That is not proof of a violation: a published sample is not necessarily the form filed in your state, and state endorsements can override it. But in a state with such a statute, it is exactly the thing to ask about.
What Kanguro Doesn't Cover
Most of Kanguro's exclusions are ordinary. Three are worth reading twice.
The prior-exam requirement. Your pet must have seen a vet in the 12 months before you enroll, or within 14 days after the policy starts — and Kanguro's terms warn that a spay/neuter or vaccine clinic may not count. Miss that window and a claim can be refused on that alone. In a BBB complaint filed in April 2026, an owner alleges their new puppy needed emergency care while they were themselves hospitalized, the exam never happened, the puppy was euthanized, and the claim was denied on that basis. Kanguro responded and BBB marked it resolved; read it as an allegation, not a finding — but the rule is real. Book that exam in your first week.
Two $1,000 ceilings. Euthanasia and all endodontic dental treatment are each capped at $1,000 per policy period in both forms, far below your annual limit.
Behavioral medication. Both forms define Prescription Medication to exclude "prescribed medication to treat Behavioral Conditions" — so even the newer form covering behavioral therapy appears to leave anxiety medication out. Ask about it directly.
Also: your pet must be free of any dermatological condition for 12 consecutive months before skin conditions are covered again; claims must be filed within 90 days; and both forms let Kanguro deny an injury or illness caused by neglect — skipped vaccinations, parasite prevention or grooming.
Claims, Reimbursement and Direct Vet Pay
Kanguro runs on reimbursement: you pay your veterinarian, then claim it back through the app. Which makes the feature it advertises hardest worth a close look.
Kanguro's pet page says direct vet payment "is available for qualifying claims over $900." We could not find that $900 threshold — or any definition of "qualifying" — in either published policy form. The older form contains no direct-pay provision at all; it assumes you have already paid, asking for "paid itemized veterinary and hospital bills." The newer one mentions it exactly once, as an exception rather than a promise: you stay financially responsible unless the claim is approved for direct payment and your vet has agreed to accept it.
So treat direct-to-vet payment as a courtesy Kanguro may extend, not a right you have purchased. If fronting a five-figure emergency bill would be hard for you, that distinction is the whole ballgame — worth asking about in writing before you buy.
On speed, Kanguro publishes different figures in different places: 3.5 days on its pet page, and five days in its own blog — the figure NerdWallet reports too. Trustpilot reviewers describe waits far longer. One operational detail surfaces in Kanguro's own replies: an unpaid balance on your account can hold up a reimbursement already approved.
Claims are filed in the app, though the claims page also lists an email address.
Where Kanguro Is Available
26 states plus Washington, D.C., as of July 2026. Not from the marketing copy: we ran ZIP codes from all 50 states through Kanguro's own quote engine and recorded which came back eligible:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia — plus Washington, D.C.
Kanguro's own pages disagree with each other and with themselves: one says 27 states above a list of 26, and the pet page claims 28. That second page also names Wisconsin — but every Wisconsin ZIP we tried came back unavailable in Kanguro's own quote engine.
Note who is missing: California, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Washington, Michigan, Minnesota and Connecticut. This footprint has moved repeatedly since 2023, so treat the date as part of the fact — and confirm your own ZIP.
The Spanish-Language Experience, Tested
This is where Kanguro is genuinely ahead of the category — and the claim survives checking, with caveats worth knowing.
Its newer policy form is properly bilingual: the complete policy in English, then the complete policy again in Spanish, with nothing diminishing the translation. And its iOS app declares both English and Spanish as supported languages in its App Store listing.
So we checked the category in July 2026. Across a dozen US pet insurers' apps — Lemonade, Spot, Figo, Pets Best, ASPCA, Embrace, Fetch, Nationwide — not one declares a Spanish locale. Lemonade's lists Dutch, French and German, but not Spanish. Nationwide has a Spanish pet page, but it is machine-translated through a proxy and states plainly that its policies and notices are written in English. Trupanion offers hand-written Spanish pages and a real Spanish-speaking phone line, then sends Spanish speakers to activate coverage on its English website. Spot, ASPCA, Pets Best and Figo offer nothing.
Three honest caveats, though. Kanguro's Spanish pages still leak untranslated English. Its Spanish terms state that the English original prevails in any dispute. And the older policy form carries a disclaimer that its Spanish text is non-binding — so which form you receive decides whether your Spanish policy means anything legally.
What Real Customers Report
Kanguro's scores are good. But the unit behind each one is different, and that is where most review pages go wrong.
| Platform | Score | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.6 | 504 reviews (169 in the past 12 months; 85% five-star, 10% one-star) |
| Google Play | 4.2 | 376 reviews |
| Apple App Store | 4.4 | 263 ratings |
| BBB | A+ | accredited since March 2026; five complaints in three years, no BBB reviews |
Two things that table hides. Apple's 263 are ratings — star taps. The US written-review feed holds just 17 reviews, 14 of them one-star. And the Trustpilot profile is company-claimed and carries a paid subscription; its default English view shows just 266 reviews, because another 181 are written in Spanish.
The complaints cluster somewhere unusual for pet insurance: not claim denials, but cancellation and post-cancellation billing, followed by documentation demands and app failures. Three of the five BBB complaints are billing.
Worth noting what is missing — organic discussion. Reddit holds one thread with four opinions, and Quora returns nothing for the brand at all. Read all of it as self-selected voice, never as a measure of how often things go wrong.
How to Cancel Kanguro Pet Insurance
Kanguro publishes a cancellation right but no cancellation method — no self-service page, nothing naming where notice goes. Use its support channels, put it in writing, and make them confirm the effective date, any refund, and that billing stopped. Your own sent timestamp proves nothing.
Florida buyers have a statutory 30-day free look. The state's Pet Insurance Act lets you return the policy for a full refund if you have filed no claim — and the 30 days run from when you receive the policy, not from when you bought it.
Then verify it stopped. Billing that continues after a cancellation request is the loudest complaint theme against Kanguro, much of it from pet-store "14-day free trial" enrollments where buyers say they never picked the insurer at all. Check your card statement for two more cycles.
Who Kanguro Is (and Isn't) Right For
Strong fit: the Spanish-preferring household. Of the US pet insurers we checked in July 2026, none pairs a fully translated policy with bilingual agents and a bilingual app the way Kanguro does. If that matters in your home, it is a real reason to choose Kanguro — just confirm which policy form you will receive, because only the newer one makes the Spanish text binding.
Reasonable fit: the shopper who has already quoted around and finds Kanguro competitive for their own pet, in a confirmed state, with the newer form's extras — behavioral therapy, holistic care, prescription food — actually worth paying for.
Poor fit: anyone who needs direct-to-vet payment as a contractual right. It is not one here. Poor fit too if you cannot get your state's actual form and disclosure in writing before paying. And Kanguro's book is small and young — not a strike against it, but it means there is little public claims-paying history to lean on.
Before You Buy: Your Verification Checklist
Everything above reduces to six questions. Ask them in writing, before you pay:
- The form. Which policy form applies in my state? Send it, plus the "Insurer Disclosure of Important Policy Provisions."
- Waiting periods. Exactly how many days for accidents, illnesses and knee conditions on that form?
- Direct vet pay. Contractual for me, or discretionary?
- The numbers. What annual limit, deductible and reimbursement rate will print on my declarations page?
- The prior exam. Does my pet's last visit satisfy it — and by what date is the next one due?
- The caps. Confirm the $1,000 euthanasia and endodontic limits, and whether behavioral medication is covered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kanguro pet insurance good?
Kanguro is a real, licensed operation with a genuinely strong bilingual product — the most complete Spanish-language offering we found in the US category. The reservation is documentary, not ethical: Kanguro publishes two different policy forms that contradict each other on waiting periods, and its own pages disagree about where it sells and what direct-vet-pay it offers. It suits a Spanish-preferring household well, and suits anyone who needs contractual certainty about direct vet payment poorly.
Who underwrites Kanguro pet insurance?
Kanguro Insurance LLC is a managing general agent, not an insurance company. Policies are underwritten by Cimarron Insurance Company, Inc. (NAIC 20400), which holds a Demotech Financial Stability Rating of A ("Exceptional") and no AM Best rating. The risk is then reinsured to Golden Tree Reinsurance Limited in Bermuda, whose own audited filings identify Kanguro as an entity under common control of Golden Tree's parent.
What is Kanguro's waiting period?
There is no single answer, and that is the problem. Kanguro's older published form (POLJACKET 12/22) sets 14 days for accidents; its newer form (PETPOL 02/25) sets 2 days. Both set 14 days for illnesses and 6 months for cruciate ligament and other knee conditions — the knee wait drops to 14 days only if you supply your pet's complete medical history and it shows no prior or existing knee problem. These are the periods in Kanguro's published samples; the form actually filed in your state, plus any state endorsement, is what controls. Ask for yours in writing before you buy.
How do I cancel Kanguro pet insurance?
Kanguro publishes a cancellation right but no cancellation method — no self-service page, and nothing naming where notice must go. Use its support channels, put the request in writing, and ask for written confirmation of the effective date, any refund, and that billing has stopped. Florida buyers also have a statutory 30-day free look, running from when they receive the policy: return it for a full refund if no claim has been filed. Because billing that continues after a cancellation request is the most common complaint against Kanguro, check your card statement for the following two cycles.
What states is Kanguro pet insurance available in?
26 states plus Washington, D.C., as of July 2026 — verified by running ZIP codes from all 50 states through Kanguro's own quote engine, not taken from its marketing copy. Kanguro's pages variously claim 27 and 28 states, and its pet page lists Wisconsin, where every ZIP we tried came back unavailable. California, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are among the states not served.
Does Kanguro pay the vet directly?
Sometimes, at its discretion — not as a right you have purchased. Kanguro's marketing says direct vet payment is available for qualifying claims over $900, but that threshold appears in neither published policy form, and "qualifying" is never defined. The older form contains no direct-pay provision at all. The newer one mentions it once, as an exception: you remain financially responsible unless the claim is approved for direct payment and your vet agrees to accept it.
Is Kanguro pet insurance available in Spanish?
Yes, and more completely than any competitor we tested. Kanguro's newer policy form runs the full policy in English and then in full in Spanish, and its app declares both languages. Of the dozen US pet insurers we checked in July 2026, none had an app declaring a Spanish locale. Two caveats: Kanguro's Spanish terms state the English original prevails in a dispute, and the older policy form disclaims its Spanish text as non-binding.
How can I get a Kanguro Insurance discount code?
Kanguro publishes no public promo-code program, and coupon sites listing Kanguro codes are affiliate-generated and frequently expired or fabricated. If you want a lower premium, the levers that actually exist are configuration ones — a higher deductible, a lower reimbursement percentage or a lower annual limit — plus asking an agent directly what discounts apply to your situation. Get any offer in writing before you enroll.
Who offers the best pet insurance?
There is no single best carrier — the right answer depends on your pet's age and breed, your state, and whether you value a low premium, a high annual limit or direct vet payment. Rather than re-rank carriers here, see our pet insurance comparison hub, and quote at least three carriers for your own pet on matched terms: same deductible, same reimbursement rate, same annual limit.
